「(岡山・倉敷工高野球部出身の)夫が社会人でも野球を続けていました。子どもには野球をやらせた方がいいのかな、という気持ちがありました」。アニメの影響も手伝い、啓太さんは野球を選んだ。福島も弟・貫太さん(16)も自然と野球のボールを握った。
備前中では瀬戸内ボーイズに所属した。「とにかく食べさせられました」と福島。昼食は白米2合。練習日でなくても白米をかき込んだ。量は苦にならない。父と同じ「倉工」へ進んでからは「何を食べるかを考えました」。タンパク質や脂質、食材を考え176センチ、88キロの体をつくりあげた。
出身の備前中からは直近の5年間で3人が球界の門をたたいている。2017年はオリックス・山本由伸、19年は同・頓宮裕真。そして、福島。頓宮のプロ入り時は激励会に出席した。同じ投手の山本には憧れを抱く。
